One Day in Stochlom, Sweden

Stockholm is a city filled with history, great pastries and neighborhoods that each have their own flair. With limited time in Stockholm, here is how to spend one FULL day around the Gamla Stan neighborhood.

Every morning needs to begin with coffee and pastries. In the neighborhoor of Gamla Stan head over to Skeppsbro Bageri and enjoy a cardamon or saffron bun. In my case I chose both. The bakery is located right next to the water and is a perfect place to soak up the morning sun with views.

Head a short distance from the bakery to the ferry stop; Slussen, board the 82 ferry to the Island of Djurgården. Tickets can be bought at the ferry port. Enjoy the ferry ride as you will pass Skeppsholmen Island before arriving.

Exit the ferry and stroll along the water on the walk towards the Vasa Museum. The Vasa Museum is home to the only preserved 17th century ship that sank in the harbors of Sweden. After the museum, continue your walk to Rosendals Trädgård, passing by the beautiful architect of the Nordic Museum as the path wanders along the edge of the island. Rosendals is home to a garden cafe, farm shop and plant shed. This farm to fork concept uses their own vegetables and all of their breads are from their artisan bakery.

Continue the walk through the garden circling back around to the ABBA Museum. At the ABBA Museum you are sure to walk your way in and dance your way out. It is fun and interactive, turning all guests into ABBA fans, at least for the day. The ABBA Museum is located right next to the Ferry stop from this morning. Hop on the ferry and take it back to Galam Stan.

For a afternoon pick me up Swedish candy is the perfect treat. Head to a grocery store to pick out a assortment of candy. Close to the Slussen ferry stop is a grocery store called COOP. Here you can fill your bag with all sorts of new candy to try. Then just next to the grocery store is Marten Trotzig, the narrowest alley in Stockholm. Walk through the alley and make your way to Stortorget Square. You will pass the German church before you walk right into the Stortorget Square. This square is recognized by many travelors. This picturesque place of Stockholm is filled with colorful buildings of red, orange, yellow and green.

After the square, continue walking through Galam Stan, cross the bridge and make your way over to the Stockholm City Hall. The City Hall is gorgeous to walk around and take in the views. If open you can climb the tower for even more views. With your feet aching head back to the hotel to rest before dinner.

In Gamla Stan, there is a small cozy restaurant that is easy to pass. Stockholms Gästabud serves up the classic Swedish dish of meatballs, mash potatoes and lingonberries, in a welcoming atmopshere. If you are in the area, give it a try!
